Will the world end according to the Mayan Calendar on 12/21/12?

According to some people, the ancient Mayans have a calendar that predicts that the end of the world will occur on December 21, 2012.  Sorry Bogart and Dexter (our two mastiffs born on this fateful day) -- your fourth birthday is your last.  It's the end of the line for you and all of us. Hence you won't have to worry about any New Year's resolutions, paying income tax for 2012 or buying any Christmas presents for that matter, we're all going out in a blaze of glory according to the Mayans.

But is that what they really mean? According to David Stuart a Mayan scholar, "the end of the calendar is completely made up by people who don't know anything about the ancient Maya". And if you read Joel Stein's article, in the January 9, 2012 issue of Time intitled "My Psychic Powers at Work" you'll see what the modern Maya feel about this whole calendar predicting the end of the world subject.

So Reckonauts...are you living your life to the fullest anticipating the end is near..... or putting money aside in your Christmas Club Account and tax-planning for the year?

There's one thing I'm looking forward to on December 21st.  The end of all of this talk about the Mayan Doomsday Prophecy.  Heck, even if they're right and the apocalypse happened, I'll still be happy because I won't have to hear people talk about it anymore.

But yes, I'm still planning on having The Reckoner! up on December 22nd. I've got an inside source that says the sun will come up, tomorrow, bet your bottom dollar that tomorrow, they'll be sun.

As I understand it, it's just the end of the Mayan calendar, or rather, the calendar is cyclical, and this is just the end of the major cycle.  A new cycle would begin after that--well, if there any Mayans around to make a new calendar.  Other people decided that the Mayan calendar was predicting the end of the world, not the Mayans.
